Family-Friendly Lounge in Orpington: Why Pato Works for Babies & Young Children

A lounge in Orpington that actually works for the whole family

Finding somewhere in Orpington that genuinely suits everyone at the table is harder than it sounds. You need decent coffee for the adults, food that works for little ones, space that doesn't make you feel like you're inconveniencing other customers, and ideally somewhere that doesn't panic when someone mentions a gluten allergy. That's exactly what we set out to create at Pato Lounge.

We're not a rushed café where you're expected to eat and move on. We're not a formal restaurant where toddlers feel out of place. We sit comfortably in between: a relaxed, all-day lounge where families, friends, solo visitors and regulars all feel at home.

Great coffee, a proper breakfast and a welcome for dogs too

Let's start with the coffee, because it matters. We take it seriously. We're not serving something generic from a catering tin. Our coffee is freshly made, properly sourced and consistently good. Colin, one of our regulars, put it plainly:

"Had a coffee large breakfast and wine. The coffee is very good and in my opinion superior to the other coffee shops. The breakfast was excellent and of a good size. A staff member kindly brought us a free doggy sausage. There is a reasonable choice of wines at reasonable prices."

That last detail, the free doggy sausage, says a lot about how we operate. Our team notices things. If you've come in with your dog, we want your dog to feel welcome too. Nobody told that staff member they had to do that. It's just what we do.

The breakfast itself is worth talking about. A good size, as Colin noted, and genuinely excellent. We're not cutting corners with thin rashers and half a tomato. If you're coming in for a full breakfast in Orpington, we want you to leave satisfied, not still hungry and slightly disappointed.

And yes, we serve wine. A reasonable range at reasonable prices, whether you're having a leisurely lunch or a relaxed mid-afternoon catch-up with a friend.

Coeliac and gluten-free diners: we take this seriously

Food allergies are not an afterthought here. If you or someone in your family has coeliac disease or a gluten intolerance, you'll know the anxiety that comes with eating out. Will the staff understand? Will there be cross-contamination? Will the options be limited to a sad side salad?

At Pato Lounge, we cater to coeliac diners properly. Rakesh, a regular visitor, has eaten at several Lounges and specifically noted:

"I've been to several "Lounges". They cater to gluten allergy (Coeliac) really well and never had an issue there ordering or with the food.

Also cater well for young children and babies. Always friendly and with a good range of food. Some dishes are really nice but there are a few dishes which are substandard.

We are regulars to another Lounge and found the above with all of them"

Honest feedback, and we appreciate it. Rakesh is a regular at the Lounge group more broadly, and his experience here in Orpington reflects what we aim for: confident, allergy-aware ordering, friendly service and a good range of food. He's also right that not every dish is a standout, and we'd rather you know that upfront than feel misled. We have dishes we're particularly proud of, and we're always working on the ones that can be better.

If you're coeliac or gluten-sensitive, please do ask our team when you arrive. We'll talk you through the menu clearly, without making you feel like a burden.

Babies and young children are genuinely welcome here

Some places say they're family-friendly and then seat you next to a loud speaker, hand you a children's menu that's basically beige food on a paper placemat, and look slightly pained when your toddler drops something. That's not us.

We cater well for young children and babies. There's space, there's flexibility and there's a team that doesn't flinch when a family with a pram walks through the door. Orpington has plenty of young families, and we want to be the place those families come back to week after week.

What does that look like in practice?

  • Space for pushchairs and prams without it becoming an obstacle course
  • A food range that suits younger eaters, not just adults
  • Staff who are genuinely friendly and patient, not just professionally polite
  • An atmosphere that's relaxed enough that a bit of noise from a little one isn't a drama

If you're a parent in Orpington looking for somewhere you can actually sit down, have a proper meal and a good coffee without feeling stressed, come and see us.

All-day food and drink: what we serve

We're open across the day, which means the menu moves with you. Morning coffee and breakfast. A proper lunch. Afternoon drinks, whether that's tea, coffee or a glass of wine. We're not locked into a narrow service window.

The food range covers a good spread of options. We have dishes that work for meat-eaters, options for those eating around dietary requirements, and a kitchen that can adapt. The coffee is consistently strong. The wine list is accessible and fairly priced.

We're not trying to be a destination restaurant. We're trying to be the place in Orpington that you come to regularly, that you trust, and that fits into real life rather than requiring a special occasion.

Why Orpington locals keep coming back

Regulars matter to us. A lot of our guests are people who've found us, liked what they found, and made us part of their routine. That might be a weekly breakfast with a friend, a post-school coffee with the kids, or a solo working lunch with a good flat white.

Orpington has a strong local community, and we feel part of it. We're not a chain that could be anywhere. We're here, in this town, serving the people who live and work nearby. When someone comes in with their dog and leaves with a smile because a member of our team brought out a sausage unprompted, that's the kind of place we want to be.

We also welcome solo visitors, not just groups and families. If you want a quiet corner, a good coffee and something decent to eat without any fuss, you'll find that here too.

What sets Pato Lounge apart from other coffee shops in Orpington

There are plenty of places to get a coffee in Orpington. Here's what makes us different:

  • The coffee quality. We consistently hear from guests that our coffee is better than the alternatives. We don't take that for granted, but we do work hard to earn it.
  • Allergy awareness. Coeliac and gluten-free guests are catered for properly, not as an afterthought.
  • Family and dog welcome. Babies, toddlers, older kids and four-legged visitors are all genuinely welcome, not just tolerated.
  • All-day offer. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon drinks. We're here across the day.
  • Relaxed atmosphere. No pressure to turn the table quickly. No hovering. Just a comfortable space to spend time.
  • Honest food. A good range, some dishes we're really proud of, and a team that will always help you choose well.
